Ghana Mourns a Legend: Highlife Icon Daddy Lumba Passes Away

Ghana’s music scene has been hit with heartbreaking news. Legendary highlife musician Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, has sadly passed away. The iconic singer died in the early hours of Saturday, July 26, 2025, at Bank Hospital in Accra, where he had been receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness.

According to sources close to the family, Daddy Lumba had been admitted a few days earlier and peacefully passed away at dawn.

By midday, crowds of grieving fans and sympathizers gathered at his East Legon home, stunned and emotional over the loss of a man whose music defined generations.

In a statement released through the family’s lawyers, Baba Jamal & Associates, Daddy Lumba was described as more than just a musician. The tribute read:

“Daddy Lumba was more than a musician; he was a cultural icon whose music touched countless lives. His soulful voice provided the soundtrack to our love stories, and his poignant lyrics captured the poetry of our struggles, dreams, and resilience.”

 


The family has asked for privacy as they mourn and assured the public that funeral arrangements will be announced soon. The official statement was signed by Fati Ali Yallah, Esq., legal representative for the Fosu family.




Who Was Daddy Lumba? – A Brief Profile

Daddy Lumba (born September 29, 1964) was a Ghanaian highlife legend, singer-songwriter, and one of the most influential musicians in the country's history. With over 33 albums to his name, his contribution to the music industry is unmatched.

He started his music journey at age 16 while attending Juaben Senior High School, where he formed the original Lumba Brothers group with school friends and his then-girlfriend Theresa Abebrese. After school, with Theresa’s support, he moved to Germany in search of better opportunities.

There, he met Ernest “Nana” Acheampong, who introduced him to highlife music. Together, they formed a new version of Lumba Brothers and eventually released their debut album Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu in 1989, thanks to financial support from Lumba’s wife, Akosua Serwaa.
